From Junkyard to Main Attraction: The Journey of the SALT Plage “Fireball”
When SALT Plage Manager Chris Warburton presented the idea for a Full Moon Party on the shores of Whitehouse Bay, the central theme was fire. And he needed a fireball. Not just any fireball. A big, bold, blazing fireball. Something unique to SALT Plage and St. Kitts. Something that could be the main attraction.
Deliberation and determination led him to the Commercial Diving Academy on Bay Road in Basseterre, where he found his shining star in the form of an old rusted, sugar hopper.
“I’d been asking around and heard that they had some old sugar hoppers down at the Dive Center. I figured it was worth a look around to see if there was something suitable,” Chris said. “And that’s where we found ‘the one’.
The sugar hopper was the perfect complement to the beach bar’s industrial-chic decor. SALT Plage is clad in remnants of the old sugar factory in Basseterre and outfitted with various elements – electrical panels, boilers, coolers – that not only give SALT Plage is retro vibe but also pay homage to the island’s sugar history.
Once back at Christophe Harbour, the SALT Plage team set about the task of preparing the new star for the stage. Chris enlisted the help of a local artist to adorn the fireball with the elements of life in St. Kitts: sun, sea, fish, palm trees, coconuts, boats, turtles, etc. The Christophe Harbour maintenance team then cut the adornments out of the metal.
And, the SALT Plage fireball was born.
No doubt the fireball is the star of the Full Moon Parties. Perched along the shores of Whitehouse Bay, the fireball is not only the backdrop for selfie snaps but also the source of fire for the fire dancers that entertain the crowds at each event.
SALT Plage hosts a Full Moon Party each month. Each event includes a full schedule of live entertainment from fire dancers and masqueraders to a live band and DJ. Food and drinks are also on sale.
The next event is planned for May 26th, so make plans to be there. Be sure to snap your selfie in front of the fireball and tag us on social media with #saltplagefireball.
