The Ocean Course and Doonbeg Golf Club Named to the Top 100 Courses in the World

By Katherine Verano in Real Estate

Golf World called Doonbeg, “A spectacularly good links built comparatively recently in really dramatic Atlantic dunes. The first is one of the best first holes anywhere in the world, and there are a number of others (the signature 14th and brilliant 15th), which are wonderfully memorable.”

According to Golf World, the panel assembled to compile the listing was the biggest and most geographically spread panel that has even been amassed to judge the merits of golf courses. By J.M. HIRSCH (AP)

Colicchio, whose numerous restaurants include Craft, Craftsteak and the recently opened Colicchio & Sons in New York, was named outstanding chef during an awards ceremony that is considered the Oscars of the food world. It's an honor for which he'd been a finalist seven other times since 2002, the same year the organization named Craft the nation's best new restaurant.

Though Colicchio drew many accolades early in his career, he rose to prominence in 1994 when he and partner Danny Meyer opened Gramercy Tavern, which earned Colicchio three stars from The New York Times and several Beard awards, including best chef in New York City in 2000 and outstanding restaurant service in 2001.

Habitat Improvement Initiative

By Katherine Verano in Real Estate

The sweetgrass awards are given to homeowners who have designed and landscaped their property to create habitat for wildlife. Forty-five homeowners have received this award on Kiawah. To achieve sweetgrass award status, properties must maintain good cover for wildlife species through landscaping techniques that enhance the habitat value of the main yard area and property buffers. Good habitat has natural “soft” edges that exhibit a gradual transition in species composition that provide cover all the way down to ground level. Homeowners can also remove invasive species of plants to create a better habitat.

Kiawah Island Real Estate Nets $61.5 Million First-Quarter Sales

By Katherine Verano in Real Estate

The strong first-quarter earnings were due in large part to $39.5 million in sales during the month of March, which is more than the total number of sales in the entire first quarter of 2009. The 25 properties sold in March represented the most activity for a single month since April of 2008.

“Our customers are experiencing more confidence and want to take advantage of the opportunities to get back in the market after the necessary caution imposed over the past 18 months.  Our strategy to stay the course and continue to increase the Island’s value has positioned Kiawah to lead the recovery of the second-home market,” says KIRE President and Broker-in-Charge, Chris Drury. “Clearly that strategy is...
